STRONG EXECUTIVE PRESENCE IS NOT MAGIC NEITHER AN INBORN POWER. YOU TOO CAN DEVELOP IT!!!

Executive presence is a crucial topic that cannot be ignored anymore. It is not only required in large organizations but also in smaller ones. Very few executives are aware of developing self-awareness and understanding the significance of what influence they impart on others or what kind of aura they develop around themselves through their confidence and poise.

But, few questions arise with the increasing popularity of executive presence development:

  • Is executive presence only for executives?
  • Are only executives taking sessions for developing executive presence?
  • Is this is just a fashion and fad?

The answer is a big NO!

Building executive presence is a top priority goal for mid-level managers, directors, team leaders, and even, in some cases, new hires and interns as well.

Every employee who is interested in becoming more polished focused, and prepared for handling organizational challenges and stepping on the milestones one after another is a suitable candidate for executive presence coaching.

According to a survey carried out on 600 professionals engaged in coaching either as coaches, HR professionals or executives, led by Brian Underhill and KimceeMcAnally, 57% of the organizations that hire coaches and around 40% of coaches identify presence as one of the two purposes for their coaching. The other one is leadership development.

It implies that organizations indeed seek robust executive presence in their employees. So, being an aspiring employee, enrolling in sessions for developing an executive presence at the earliest will hugely benefit you in the long-term.

How will Executive Presence benefit your Career?

When you seek to move ahead in your career, building executive presence is of paramount importance. Regardless of what level you are at now, developing a strong presence will make you notice in the eyes of your colleagues, subordinates, and senior executives sooner.

Executive presence may seem like a magic potion but it is more of an agile and fluid approach that helps you adapt to different communication styles and audiences, and demonstrate readiness and connectedness with the audience. Showing up with confidence, reflecting positive energy, maintaining composure, and putting others at ease are the traits that help an employee getting promoted and appreciated.

Sylvia Ann Hewlett, the CEO of the Center for Talent Innovation and a leading expert in the field of talent management, mentioned in “The Sponsor Effect: Breaking Through the Glass Ceiling” that –

“52 percent of men and 45 percent of women believe promotions to senior management are based on a candidate looking and acting like C-suite executives”

One of the studies conducted by the Center for Talent Innovation in 2012 revealed that “executive presence accounts for 26 percent of what it takes to get the next promotion” and also affirmed that “presence alone won’t get you promoted, but its absence will impede your progress”.

So, the sooner you look for such sessions that help in developing executive presence, the better for your career.

Great leaders are not defined by the absence of weakness, but rather by the presence of clear strengths.
