PASS THROUGH STRESS WITH LAUGHTER

Laughter is great. In 2004, my marriage was crumbling due to my own self-sabotaging feelings, thoughts and actions. I had no clue at that time how laughter will help me out. In that time of painful agony, I came across the book The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama and Howard Cutler. Howard Cutler, a psychiatrist posed questions to the Dalai Lama on the concept that the purpose of life is happiness.

rohit_bassi_laughter_compassionResized

Dalai Lama, is know as the Buddhist Tibetan spiritual leader and it was this book that got me to on the path of the miracle of compassion. The book talks about love but before dwelling into love it layouts that the foundation is compassion. Compassion holds the key to eliminate human suffering.

Compassion is highly misunderstood, unfortunately, many see it as pity and believe it to be wimpish, frail or weak. A trait considered by many in the world as pathetic. On the other hand, when you listen to the likes of Dalai Lama, Daniel Goleman or Lorne Ladner you learn compassion has got nothing to do with pity.

In the words of Dalai Lama “Compassion is not religious business, it is human business, it is not luxury, it is essential for our own peace and mental stability, it is essential for human survival.”

The beauty about compassion is that its fuels awareness, gratitude and the final crucial ingredient being laughter. If you have heard any talks done by the Dalai Lama you will get a pleasant surprise that he actually is a “professional laugher” and he openly admits to this title. He knows that laughter is the best medicine.

Listen to him and you will realise he laughs about anything and everything; he even cracks jokes about farting. In one of his interviews, he talks about a personal incident during a flight. He is unable to hold his fart. As he cannot just “let it out,” he vigilantly looks in all direction then he lifts one of his butt cheeks and farts. The interviewer and the crowd burst out in laughter with him.

Dalai Lama knows that laughter can mend bridges, bring harmony and unites humankind. He is a man who cannot return to his homeland and considers himself to be homeless for more than half a century. Yet, this serene individual laughs, laughs and laughs.

Laughter, in essence, brings six main benefits for you:

  1. Relaxes the whole body
  2. Boosts the immune system
  3. Decreases stress hormones
  4. Triggers the release of endorphins
  5. Improves the flow of blood
  6. Defuses the anger held within

Throughout one’s life, one is likely to face adversity. These adverse moments affect our feelings, thoughts, health, career, finance, relationships, growth and much more. As humans, we love to have self-pity yet this is a ridiculous notion that has no productivity for our inner self.

Either we can take the path of a victim or get up and be victorious. Decide where it is important to spend your time, effort & energy. Would you like to spend it in on loving life or fearful life?

And when you allow laughter to take control of the way you respond to life, it permits you to focus your attention towards a loving life. Laughter fuels compassion and this in turns allows you to be at peace with yourself, your circumstances and surroundings.

“Laughter is good for thinking because when people laugh, it is easier for them to admit new ideas to their minds.” – Dalai Lama

HIRING A PROFESSIONAL SPEAKER PAYS OFF

These days many individuals claim to be speakers.  It is great to know so many are speaking to spread a message that serves others. Unfortunately, they are a dime a dozen around of these self-proclaimed speakers or to be more specific speakers who are “fake”.

rohit_bassi_presentation_skills

There are a few around who are truly professional speakers. The keyword being professional and yes they earn their living from speaking, speaking is their business, a means of generating revenue. But more importantly, speaking is the intervention, the master tool they use to serve their listeners.

Motivation is one something that everyone thrives to maintain all the time. Maintaining the motivation level in the heart of every person is crucial so that the tasks they perform can be carried out successfully. There are situations when interventions are required to get the motivation going. It could be the case when your team starts losing its interest from the job, the company is going through tough times, the business environment is somewhat destructive or it is simply a matter of stimulating your team (company) to get to the next level.

A catalyst is required to move forward. The need to motivate and inspire requires the hiring of the services of a professional speaker. His/her ideas emerge as a solution to reignite the motivational and inspirational flame.

What Is A Professional Speaker?

A professional speaker (also known as a motivational speaker, inspirational speaker, keynote speaker) specialises in presenting through which he/she makes a living by delivering paid speeches to a variety of groups on certain key topics.

These speeches are typically about having a better future, making more money, subject matter (example sales, service excellence, leadership, branding, creativity & innovation, storytelling, manufacturing, technology) and many more.

Typically, they carry a high repute as an expert on the subject being discussed; hence, encourages the audience to become more attentive to their own talents and abilities as well as look at the things from a different perspective.

Characteristics of A Professional Speaker

A professional speaker shares certain characteristics that make them excel in their field. They must be confident in his/her abilities, be well aware of his/her subject matter as well as be able to relate well with his/her audience. A successful inspiring speaker in one who possesses all the below-listed characteristics:

  • Personal motivation for their profession
    Ability to connect with others
    Powerful voice
Good accent and fluency in the language in which they deliver a speech
Good knowledge about the topic that has to be discussed
Dedication to self-improvement in their subject and speaking skills

A professional speaker tends to have:

  • A good website showing his/her areas of expertise
Videos in action (showing their delivery style and teaser of their work)
Free content (blogs, downloads, ebooks etc) to serve anyone who is visiting their site

Professional speakers through the years have invested time and money to develop their expertise, public speaking skills and powerful presentations required to make an event successful.

“Speaking is my business. Like any business, there’s a cost involved. And a value to the customers who purchase it.” –Richard Oberbruner

Role of A Professional Speaker

The key intention of a professional speaker is to inspire and motivate the listener. Their ultimate goal is to change people profoundly on a mental and emotional level. In this manner enabling them to bring about personal and professional transformations.

You can find motivational speakers delivering sessions at companies, key events, trade shows, conferences and universities. Some speakers are hired to speak as special guests while others travel a certain circuit of speaking engagements. There are also some speakers who write and sell inspirational books to better oneself. Then there are speakers who train, facilitate, mentor or coach. By diversifying in this manner, they spread their message and potentially develop multiple revenue streams.

Almost all professional speakers relate their speech with their own personal experience that somehow connects to the audiences too. They use their personal experience to inspire others so that they can face the situation more confidently and combat their situation. They speak in a variety of venues like company boardrooms, seminars, summits, community centres, schools and conferences.

Conclusion

Professional speakers are trusted advisors who can bring a positive practical change in your life by encouraging you to live up to your full potential. Kids, teens and adults alike benefit from what professional speakers offer.

EXECUTIVE PRESENCE – WHAT IS IT TRULY?

Many blab about leadership executive presence and make the big mistake on focusing on the outer appearance and style. And when you go around the world you will note everyone looks at leadership differently. It is like the old saying “different strokes for different folks”.

martin_luther_rohit_bassi_presentation_skills_executive_presenceResized

There are a number of traits that are commonly found amongst people who are considered to have great leadership. You will note such leadership is inspiring and transformational. They have this ability to create immense impact and have a high sense of presence. In other words they:

  • Have the X-factor, confident and charismatic
  • Are not demanding (domineering/ tyrant with an ego) but commanding (worthy of a respect/ person of integrity)
  • Are people for whom you are willing to stop and listen to them when they speak (not out of fear or the title you hold)

“Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be”. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

It does not matter if they have been labelled an introvert or extrovert. Both labels have the ability to ooze great impact and presence. In other word’s they have Executive Presence.

Consider and ask yourself these question about executive presence:

  • Why would anyone want to be lead by you?
  • What are the behaviours of leaders with great presence?
  • What could you do immediately to start to live by these behaviours of great leaders?

Numerous definitions are out there on executive presence (EP). Some of these being:

Bates Executive Presence Index™ says it is a three-dimensional model of character, substance, and style.
Andrew Bryant says it the ability to project confidence and gravitas (substance) under pressure.
Sylvia Ann Hewlett as her book title says it all “The missing link between merit and success”

All of these are great definitions. Here is something which is even much simpler. It takes into account all cultures (eastern and western), gender, creed, caste and colour. It is a global and universal definition of executive presence:

“Executive Presence is the harmonious integration of ICE in developing and sustaining credibility.”

In other words, I.C.E. (intelligence, communication and emotional wisdom) is all about JIGRA. To expand on this definition it is about:

  • Journey of self-leadership then leading others
  • Inner self-discovery leading to developing your outer self
  • Gratitude in all situations, no matter how tough
  • Respect and integrate both emotions and logic
  • Awakening The A.C.E – Awareness. Consciousness. Energy

It means to have grit, be brave of heart or have resilience. And it required at all levels, not just for leaders or leadership roles. It required to live one’s life with compassion, love and joy.

BANG!!! BANG!!! BANG!!! PRESENTATION & PUBLIC SPEAKING

Presentation or public speaking is very painful for many.  Add to the misery, sad but true you now have an attention span less than of a gold-fish. The sweet looking goldfish attention span is nine seconds, but according to a research done by Microsoft”

presentation-public-speaking-rohit-bassi.jpg

“The average human attention span in 2000 was 12 seconds, but by 2013 it was only 8 seconds (1 second shorter than a goldfish!).”

Now that is extremely scary especially with the digital age we live in. Your audience is often distracted by their own smartphones, tablets or laptop screens. On top of that, they are listening to you with your slide deck doing you no favours. And then there are some who take a nap and others just seem so dumbfounded that you can no longer be bothered with them.

You can find all the excuses you want but it your responsibility as the speaker to keep the attention span of the audience at a high, a constant high. The simple B3 Formula works like a charm. It ensures to involve, engage and enable your audience.

Over the years I have attended numerous presentations and I have delivered numerous myself. Through these experiences, I learnt there are three crucial parts to any talk. Just like a book, movie or a story all three parts have equal weighting. In fact, you love the book, movie, story and the presentation when all three parts entice you. These three parts being:

  • Start/ Beginning
    Middle/ Centre
    End/ Conclusion

B3 Formula brings your presentation to life, which means:

  • Start/ Beginning with a BANG!!!
  • Middle/ Centre erupt with a number of Bang! Bang!, Bang!
  • End/ Conclusion end with finale BANG!!!

These BANGS are a mixture of emotions, facts, figure, stories, humour, videos, audios, props, words, voice, body language and anything that will grab the attention of the audience. Thus you ensure you involve, engage and enable your audience.

In all three parts of the presentation, your audience attention span is on a high, the risk of distraction due to their smartphones, tablets or laptop screen is literally eliminated. Indeed the nap taker and the dumbfounded souls have a complete focus on you.

In other words, remember your presentation is a spectacular fireworks symphony. It is all about the BANG!!! Bang! Bang! Bang! BANG!!!

AI SHAPING THE LEADERS OF THE FUTURE

Artificial intelligence is increasing in presence, and we can either embrace it or be replaced by it. This is not a reference to the popular belief that robots will rise up against us and wipe out humankind from existence; it is an acknowledgement that the rise of AI will have an impact on society, both today and in the future.

For tomorrow’s leaders, this will be particularly important, because just as today’s leaders have no resemblance to the warlords of yesteryear, tomorrow’s leaders will look nothing like today’s. Are you ready to evolve and meet tomorrow’s challenges?

artificial-intelligence-rohit-bassi-executive-presence.jpg

How AI and human capital will measure up

Whatever your feelings are about the issue, AI is here to stay, and it’s already having an impact on how your company operates. Even as a fledgling technology, AI is much better than human beings at identifying patterns, automating areas of performance and avoiding errors. It’s already acing the task, with a large number of company executives reporting that AI’s most critical business function is the improvement of operational efficiency.

We are seeing jobs for drivers, paralegals, accountants and the like begin to whither, and this trend may continue as AI advances. Leaders, therefore, must focus on the things human beings are better at; things like analysing. Humans outshine their robot competition in providing the ‘why’ when machines provide the ‘how’. Successful leaders of the future will need to build ongoing learning and critical analysis into organisation culture to keep their people competitive.

Funnily enough, AI is now handling a significant amount of the training of humans. Executives are investing in AI for employee training at a higher rate than for building data-based solutions. This is a somewhat encouraging sign that AI is being used to help employees do better at their jobs rather than replacing them.

The traits of tomorrow’s leaders

As well as training their workforce to complement the presence of AI, leaders of the future may have the following traits:

  • Adaptability – with an evolving workforce and a changing world, leaders will need to adapt to more than just new technologies.
  • Acknowledging skillsets – as AI optimises efficiencies, it will be more important than ever for leaders to surround themselves with people smarter than they are to succeed.
  • Long-term vision – history has shown that a forward-thinking approach is more important than short-term certainty, and this will not be changing anytime soon.
  • Forming purposeful connections – as AI reshapes and, inevitably, reduces the workforce, it will be extremely important to build meaningful connections.
  • Self-awareness – leaders will have to avoid delusion by identifying and understanding their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Tolerance for tension – leadership means taking the rough with the smooth, so it will be essential to exercise patience when the storms come.
  • Curiosity of vision – AI lacks curiosity and vision, so leaders need to have these traits to solve problems that arise.
  • Engagement – human interactions and engagement cannot be coded, and AI cannot be allowed to hinder transparency in leadership. Engagement will be key.

Putting Emotional Wisdom before EQ & IQ

The single most important trait of tomorrow’s leaders will be emotional wisdom. This is the lesser-known attribute that few are aware of, but it is more important in daily life. So-called ‘soft’ skills like “emotional wisdom” will become more important in the human workforce than ‘hard’ skills’, because the latter are precisely what AI is designed to do better than humans.

The leader of the future will need to complement AI rather than compete with it. Currently, AI cannot be taught empathy, or to infer meaning and manage emotions, and emotion is a key consideration even in business. Your AI itself will tell you that a large percentage of leadership success is attributed to emotional wisdom; is your company creating the leaders of the future?

I serve people and organisations focus upon the most important leadership attributes, and inspire to develop their own unique formula for success mastery. Connect with me or book me to be inspired by developing an executive presence that leads to your own unique formula of success mastery.
